Identification of Multilingual Learners

When a student enrolls in Laraway CCSD 70C, families complete a Home Language Survey as part of the registration process. The survey helps identify students who may benefit from additional language support.

 

The Home Language Survey asks:

 

1. Is a language other than English spoken in your home?

2. Does your child speak a language other than English?

 

Completing a Home Language Survey does not automatically place a student in the Multilingual Program. If the survey indicates that a student may need language support, the student will complete an English language proficiency assessment to determine eligibility for multilingual services.

 

Assessment

Students identified through the Home Language Survey are assessed using a state-approved English language proficiency screener. These assessments are administered by trained educators and help determine a student's level of English proficiency and need for language support.

 

The assessment measures student language development in the following areas:

• Listening

• Speaking

• Reading

• Writing

 

The type of assessment used depends on the student's grade level and enrollment information. Assessment results help guide decisions about appropriate language services and support.

 

Placement in Multilingual Services

After assessment results are reviewed, students who qualify for multilingual services are placed in the program that best meets their language and academic needs.

Laraway CCSD 70C provides services through two program models:

 

• Transitional Bilingual Education (TBE)

• Transitional Program of Instruction (TPI)

 

Students may receive English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction, English language instruction, and/or support in their home language based on their individual needs and program placement.

 

The goal of placement is to provide students with the support they need to develop English proficiency while continuing to grow academically.
