Social Work Support Services

According to the National Mental Health Association, almost 20% of all children are in need of some type of mental health support service. Sadly, fewer than 1 in 5 of the 17.5 million children in need of services actually receive the services. Many of these students will not achieve academic success due to social, emotional, and behavioral problems affecting school performance. School social workers help these students through early identification, prevention, intervention, counseling and support. Laraway & Oak Valley Schools have a full time school social worker to help address and meet the social and emotional needs of children in order to help them achieve success in school and life.

School social work is a specialized area of practice within the broad field of social work. School social workers:

  • Build trusting relationships with students, families and school personnel
  • Provide crisis intervention, counseling services, support and case management
  • Maintain confidentiality of students and their families
  • Link students and families with school and community resources
  • Collaborate with all school personnel to assess students’ social/emotional obstacles to academic success
  • Help families understand school policies, services and programs
  • Provide home visits/meet families to understand and address barriers to student learning
  • Assist teachers and principals in developing plans to help students with academic and behavioral difficulties
  • Develop/facilitate/coordinate prevention activities and intervention strategies

If you, your child, or your family are in need of support, please reach out to Laraway and Oak Valley’s school social worker at 815-727-5196 (ext. 262).
